Why was Big Brother NOT watching?

It's been a year of suicides. More than a few friends have slain themselves. Then, this week, a known associate did the same. Only, this gentleman did not choose a rope to hang himself. He jumped off the Worli Sea-Link. Outside of the philosophical and emotional storm that such a death whips up, another social question emerges. One that no seems to speak about.

What the hell were the authorities doing, as a man drowned off the most expensive landmark in Mumbai?

In the last year alone, Mumbai has seen an addition of a few thousand "surveillance cameras" being installed.
* There're hundreds at traffic lights. Every Mumbaiite will see the satire in that. (I'd love to make a documentary from just their footage - i'm sure Michael Moore will not hold a candle to THAT one!)
* There's thousands in malls and restaurants. Not that a single incident has been averted because of those. Worse, when footage is sought for events that demand probes, it's never found or is "deleted". A classic example being the "Mantralaya Fire"...
* And let's not even begin to discuss the security cameras that are there in every two bit IT corporate office. Short of your anus being probed, everything else is checked before you get into a firm's premises.

*So, how is it that: THERE WAS NO SURVEILLANCE CAMERA ON THE SEA-LINK???

Touted as the most expensive sea-link ever built on the planet, it is a shock that no one monitors its traffic on video!!! And some questions emerge:

* Would a person's life have been saved, if the sea-link was monitored?
* What would have happened, if it was not a person wanting to end his life - but a TERRORIST instead? Is the city's most prominent, new landmark that vulnerable????? (Oops, I said the "T" word!!!)
* Why did the police need to track a "mobile-phone signal" to locate the spot of the jump - when video surveillance should have done that instead?
* What will prevent it from taking over Golden Gate's dubious record? That number is less than 1,200 - and given that 100,000 Indians kill themselves every year (yes, 20% of the world's suicides are in our nation), how long will it take for the Sea-Link to become the destination of choice????

Finally, the most worrisome question is: What if there ARE cameras on the bridge? Who was watching and why was nothing done?

Oh Big Brother! Where the fuck were'st thou????

(PS: Friends back in Mumbai - I request you to demand some answers on this. Who knows, you may save a few lives in the future. And perhaps expose a culpable homicide.)
